HISTORY OF SPORTS CHANBARA

Sports Chanbara is a free-style Japanese combat sport, which originated from Kodachi Goshindo (Self-defense with short sword). Sports Chanbara uses the short sword (Kodachi), long sword (Choken) and other traditional Japanese weaponry, such as the dagger, spear, halberd, long and short staff. Sports Chanbara was founded by Tanabe Tetsundo Sensei, who himself is an accomplished swordsman in Japan.

Tanabe Sensei's idea for Sports Chanbara is for it to be a free-style sword fighting sport, that can be easily enjoyed and yet remain as realistic as possible. Thus came about the innovation of “air soft” technology. All equipment used in Sports Chanbara are padded, hollow-core, inflatable training weapons. With the use of “air soft” equipment, Tanabe Sensei hopes to promote the spirit of safety*, fairness* and freedom* through SpoChan training.

Safety*

: equipment and training focus on preventing injury.

Fairness*

: equal opportunity for all, training equipment standardized.

Freedom*

: to allow players to be creative when they play Sports Chanbara, because it is “air soft”, players are free to handle their swords in a manner that best suits themselves.

THE SPOCHAN SPIRIT

I believe that this sport essentially does not require referees. If players would recognize the results of the game, frankly admit to being hit and defeated, and refreshingly admire each other, there is no need to be concerned with the results of the game. That is to say “self judgment”. This is the judgment by the players towards one's opponent, and that one can accept the other. Self-awareness depends on the understanding of the importance of honesty.

All the people in the world would like to promote mutual understanding as fast as possible. We are trying sincerely to achieve this. By overcoming ethnic barriers and breaking the thick wall of racial colour, people in the world are trying to create the mind of the World Citizen. Japanese are also participating in the process.
